Catalog Course Description:  Arts1112

A digital arts course that further explores topics covered in ARTS 1112. Studio assignments are designed to synthesize concepts with technique. Contemporary theory and practice in digital arts is explored via lectures and student presentations.

Course Objectives:

This is an introductory course to the discipline of visual communications. It is not a class that will teach computer software such as Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, although help and tips for using these programs will be offered periodically throughout the course. It will educate you in basic design terminology and theory and the development and communication of creative concepts, from inception to completion. Be prepared to verbalize your thought processes as you develop your projects, as class critiques will be a regular event. Your peers and I will offer our insights on your projects in order to make them as strong as they can possibly be. Critiques and class meetings will be held. Expect to work on class assignments outside of our regular meeting time.
The purpose of this course is to provide a solid foundation in concepts, principles, language and techniques specific to the profession of visual communications. Students will gain experience sketching, storyboarding, and developing their designs through mixed and digital design media. Most projects will require the utilization of various computer programs to assist in producing your work formal print presentations. Students are required to participate in critiques during and at the completion of each project.
Prerequisite: N/A

Course Requirements:

The artist is responsible for making proposals for each project including sketches or models, list of
possible materials and outcome. These projects can be independent of one another or may be a series
of work by the artist. Consider theme, content, research, production and final delivery of work.
Other Studio Requirements that include: Class participation/Resumes/Sketchbooks/Link to online
work/In Class Projects, etc.
Critique dates are predetermined but can be moved at discretion of Professor.
Students are responsible for providing all materials for their projects.
The YHC Sketchbook Project: Outside project to be completed by due date TBA.
Outside Sketchbooks are required as they should demonstrate your process of how you work.

brief that details the project. (A creative brief example will be distributed for format/template.) It should
have the artist name/logo on the brief.

Artist may invite others to attend the critique. Please do not miss a critique otherwise it is as if you did not complete the work; also if the critique starts and if you arrive late then you will be assigned an F. Participating in a critique is imperative to your success in the studio. Don’t miss/be tardy to critiques.

Online Studio Portfolio:

All artist in this studio course should create an online portfolio/presence of their work. It The link/site does not have to be a formal presentation but instead a place where your sketches/inspirations/creative process and finished work will live for the semester. Think of it as a safe deposit box where all your work lives should you destroy/lose your original work. You can document your process as you create with your cellphone or other photography. Many of your choices for this online presence will allow you to choose whether or not you want your work to be private or public.

Most sites are Free and it’s important each of you have an online presence as a creative individual. These sites will be combined with the course site so we can all see what everyone is doing at any specific time. You can also put work you find inspirational or work by other artist you research or it can be a site dedicated only to your own work and the process by which you create.  I want to see not only the finished assignments but what inspired you to create the finished work (the process of creating.) You can use videos or photos.
behance.com or any other online site that can host your work.

The YHC Sketchbook Project

Inspired by the original Sketchbook Project (www.sketchbookproject.com) each artist will create/complete the small sketchbook that was given to you by the Professor. This 24-page sketchbook should have a theme. It has no boundaries except the sketchbook must return in it’s original size and number of pages. Content/Concept is up to you. You can take it apart. You can use any media you see fit to honor your concept/theme. Traditional methods such as drawing/painting/printmaking/photography and can even include digital printing methods.  This sketchbook project should not align itself with your other studio work but instead be a departure for more experimenting and creativity. Examples
to be shown in class.

Required Texts:
Although there are no specific required periodicals for this course each artist should research, investigate and note any reference materials used during the process of creating the work prior to critique. This could be found materials that inspire the work created by each artist. Research is critical to success. Please use the Miller Library. Everyone should have a flash drive to keep work on and will turn it into Professor at end of the semester to demonstrate work from the semester.
Required Texts:
Each project will be presented as a conceptual problem for you to solve. Your ideas and concepts must be communicated throughout the creative process, and it is expected that the nal work be presented professionally. Assignments will use the artistic foundational concepts you have learned up until this point, but will begin to incorporate concepts and theory which are found specifically in the world of graphic design. The projects will encompass a range of visual exercises which will encourage you to experiment and express yourself creatively. Research in graphic design on your own time is highly encouraged in order for you to gain a strong background in graphic design history, techniques, and stylistic references.
Grading Procedures:

Each assignment will have sufficient time allotted for you to complete the project. The due date for each assignment will be announced at the beginning of each project, and you will be reminded of it often. For any work not turned in on the due date, one letter grade will be removed for each calendar day it is late (not class day!). Grades will be determined after each project’s critique takes place; failure to participate in an announced critique will result in an F for that assignment, whether your project is complete or not. Once the announced critique has started late students can participate but will receive the letter grade F for the project Do not be late! Design, concept, and craftsmanship all factor into your project grade.

Each project will be given 2 letter grades and then averaged together for a final grade. The top grade is for Concept and the bottom grade is Presentation.  Ex: A/C+= 6.3pts

Attendance will be taken at the beginning of every class. Unexcused absences and habitual tardiness will not be tolerated. Students are allowed three excused absences; however, each absence beyond three will result in your final grade being reduced by one letter grade. You are responsible for any material missed due to absence. You are expected and required to return to class with any work that is currently due. Please be courteous and come to class on time.  Again, the Professor will notify by email any artist to let them know they have reached their maximum 3 absences. Note: Being Tardy 3 times equals one (1) absence.
